National consultation workshop on regulations on co-management in fisheries resources protection and management of Marine Protected Areas in Viet Nam (22-11-2017)
In the morning of 22nd November 2017 in Ha Noi, the Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) collaborated with the Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) and the Central Management Board of Coastal Resources for Sustainable Development (CRSD) organized a national consultation workshop on regulations on co-management in fisheries resources protection and the regulation on management of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Viet Nam.
The workshop was attended by delegates from relevant ministries and agencies, local representatives, representatives from national parks and marine protected areas, representatives from NGOs, international organizations, associations, and national, international experts on co-management and MPAs conservation.
At the workshop, delegates shared information and comments on the new Fisheries Law amendments adopted by the National Assembly at its November 21st 2017 meeting session related on co-management regulations in the protection of fisheries resources and management regulations of MPAs. In addition, the workshop also presented the draft Decree detailing and implementing measures for some articles of the Fisheries Law and the draft Regulation on management of marine protected areas in Vietnam.
Mr. Tran Dinh Luan, Deputy Director General of D-Fish and Mrs. Nguyen Thu Hue, Director of MCD confirmed that with the amendment of revised Fisheries Law on the 21st Nov 2017, the concept of co-management was first introduced into a law that affirmed local and community status for the protection and use of fisheries resources, and contributed to food security, social security, as well as helping Viet Nam to integrate with the general trend of the world. The workshop aims at promoting and enhancing information sharing, the exchange of ideas and the participation of stakeholders in co-management and MPAs conservation.
In the framework of the workshop, in addition to presentations on the content of legal documents related to co-management in fisheries resources protection and regulation of management of marine protected areas in Viet Nam, participants also discussed the contents of the draft regulations related to the implementation of some articles of the revised Fisheries Law and the draft regulation on management of MPAs of Viet Nam.
